QUETTA: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered an assertive address at the Command and Staff College in Quetta on Saturday, highlighting Pakistan’s domestic achievements, foreign policy priorities, and the country’s unwavering resolve in the face of regional tensions.

During his speech, the prime minister asserted that Pakistan has excellent relations with Gulf countries, praised Saudi Arabia as Pakistan’s best friend, and reaffirmed close ties with China, describing it as a “trusted partner that helps Pakistan in every crisis.”

He acknowledged the role of friendly nations in supporting Pakistan’s progress, adding that they now want Islamabad to focus on expanding trade.

On the domestic front, Shehbaz Sharif said his government has prioritized economic reforms, innovation, and counter-terrorism to address the country’s challenges. “We faced those challenges with iron determination. We will soon eradicate the scourge of terrorism,” he stated.

The prime minister claimed significant economic progress, citing a 28% increase in revenue compared to last year, a successful agreement with the IMF, and a drop in inflation to single digits. “The successful agreement with the IMF has stabilized the economy,” the PM observed.

He added that smuggling and electricity theft have been curtailed, helping stabilize the economy. The economic stability has in turn improved the lives of the common man, he claimed. “Reforms at the fundamental level are essential for long-term economic stability,” he noted.

Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the government’s initiatives to adopt blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies as part of its drive toward modernization. “We are embracing innovation to align with global developments,” he said.

In a firm tone, the prime minister said there will be no compromise on corruption, declaring zero tolerance and pledging accountability at every level. “The threats facing Pakistan are not limited to the traditional battlefield,” he stressed.

Tensions with India

Referring to recent hostilities with India, Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s armed forces had successfully targeted seven high-value sites in India. “India responded with missiles instead of dialogue,” he said, accusing the Indian military of resorting to aggression and targeting Pakistani civilians under the pretext of the Pahalgam incident.

He reiterated that Pakistan would never allow India to weaponize water, stressing that the Indus Waters Treaty will be defended at all costs. “India has been defeated both on the battlefield and at the diplomatic front. We will not allow India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty,” he asserted. “If India does such a thing again, we will give another befitting reply.”

The premier also commended Field Marshal Asim Munir’s leadership and professional skills, crediting them for the “historic success” during the recent tensions with India. He also recalled how the field marshal remained determined and confident during that time. “Our forces are the guardians of Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity,” he added, noting the high morale of both the military and the nation.

Shehbaz Sharif ended his speech by calling for national unity and seizing the moment for progress. “We must take advantage of this momentum and move forward as a united nation,” he said. Welcoming foreign guests present at the college, the premier added, “Your presence here is a reflection of our excellent relations.”
