PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday visited Kalam and Kanju where he announced Rs10 billion grant for the flood-hit areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after being briefed about the devastation caused by floods and the ongoing relief work.
“Floods have damaged houses, hotels and crops. 22 people have died in flood in Kanju while 165 houses have been destroyed by rains in Kalam. The process of roads’ rehabilitation through heavy machinery is underway,” the officials briefed the prime minister.
The prime minister also met the tourists stranded in Kalam and ordered the authorities to immediately move them to a safe place. Following his instructions, a helicopter landed in Kalam for moving the tourists to a safe area.
The prime minister also ordered the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to ensure the rehabilitation of devasted roads on an emergency basis.
He also met the flood-hit people in Kanju after which he spoke to media and said that the flood caused great destruction in the country.
“Hotels should not have been built in the river. It was a bad planning to build hotels on the path of the river. We are grateful to the armed forces for moving the tourists to a safe place,” Shehbaz stated.
“Floods in Balochistan and Sindh have caused a huge damage to crops. More than 1,000 people have died in the country, and thousands have been injured,” he added.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced Rs10 billion grant for the flood-hit areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
“I will not sit with ease until the restoration of the last house destroyed in flood. I will continue visiting the flood-hit areas,” he vowed.
“Seven hundred thousand animals drowned in flood. I am personally monitoring the rehabilitation of flood-hit people,” he maintained.
“Planes with aid are coming from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkey every day and night. Friendly countries are helping the flood victims. Aid will be transparently delivered to them,” he reaffirmed the pledge.
